Mostly, I'll just let the comic speak for itself here, but substitute "beanie" for anything in your life that you're waiting for (career success, relationships, etc) and it really hits home, at least for me.
I think we can all identify with the disappointment and the 'numbness' we think we feel (or want to), but the encouragement I take is this; even when we're disappointed over and over again, it doesn't diminish from the enjoyment when we finally do get what we desire.
"Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life." Proverbs 13:12
Still, it doesn't make the waiting any easier.
