the final frontier....

If you include facebook stalking as online dating then my guess is that approximately 98% of the single population dates online (the other 2% living in areas of the world that don't have internet access). Side note: is it called "Libro del Cara" in Spanish speaking nations?

Due to this, and the several successful relationships (including 2 marriages and two engagements) of my friends, I have decided to step into the murky waters that are "online dating."

I must admit, even though I have never looked down on anyone for dating online, I have been hesitant to try it for several reasons. First, it always sort of seemed like 'quitting' to me and taking the easy road, which of course it isn't. And secondly, though I have not looked down on others, for fear of others looking down on me. Both of these hesitations have been answered.

The first by simply coming to the realization that it is far from a guarantee and that you really have to be willing to put yourself out there to make it work. The second was answered only after signing up. I shared my decision with a few friends and received merely a ho-hum reaction. It seems that online dating has passed beyond the 'avante garde' and moved firmly into the mundane. Not surprising if the Match.com commercials are correct (that 20% of new relationships start online).

So, we'll see how it goes. While I would love to find that 'special someone', I'm really looking at this as an opportunity to meet some new people outside of my current circles and learning to be more comfortable in dating situations. At the very least it will help me further my personal people skills.

The goal is 3 first dates in the first month...I'll keep you posted.

  1. Yay for embarking on this wacky dating journey! I know you'll have great stories and plenty of fun.

And please come up with funny nicknames for these girls so we can reference them later for a joke.
